I hate summaries. I’ve been trying to write one for the past couple of weeks. It’s the most miserable experience I’ve ever encountered.
Okay, parts of it are fun. From what I can figure out from looking at suggestions on the Net, I’ve already got the “blurb” that sums up the action and sets the stage. Thanks to Ms. Lisle’s system of revision I’ve got the plot clearly outlined along with sub-plots.
It’s the writing that’s getting to me. It sounds so…stiff. Seriously. I read it and feel like I need a nap.
Grrr. Anyone out there have any ideas on how to make a novel summary sound interesting? Seriously, it’s very frustrating. I read the actual novel and smile. Then, I look at the summary and realize I’m not doing my book any favors by turning one in.
One suggestion I’ve heard that I’ll try is to write it as if I were telling a good friend about the book. I think I’ll try that for now. But I’m willing to hear any other suggestions. Anyone?
